“AND IN THE OTHER CORNER….” WEIGHING IN ON RED LIGHT CAMERAS

There is almost nothing about driving that doesn’t send a bee up somebody’s butt. Below is a small list of sites and blogs from the polar extremes of the RLC issue. They are provided not for any relation they may have to driving like ass but, as they say, “as a contribution to the literature”, such as it is.

www.thenewspaper.com
The Newspaper.com calls itself “a journal covering motoring issues around the world from a political perspective.” A quick look at its main topics listing shows a special focus on red light cameras, police enforcement, “bad policy and injustice”, and “hypocrisy.”

www.motorists.org
The National Motorists Association (NMA) “was founded in 1982 to represent and protect the interests of North American motorists.” They’re against red light cameras and road blocks; for better drivers’ ed, more reasonable DUI laws, “lane courtesy”, and, in general, higher speed limits. One of their basic tenets states, in part, “We believe in freedom and responsibility to make choices, not one-size-fits-all legislation…”, a truly scary proposition in Boston. But, then again, their headquarters is in Milwaukee.

www.highwayrobbery.net
Highwayrobbery.net is a site providing “info and advice about California’s red light cameras.” This site is pretty intense, but you gotta like a guy this deep into “signal timing tables!”

www.stopredlightrunning.com
This is the site for the National Campaign to Stop Red Light Running which is “ dedicated to reducing the incidence of red light running” and, they tell us, have “assembled a team of leaders from the fields of law enforcement, transportation engineering, healthcare and emergency medicine, and traffic safety, to tackle this crucial safety issue.” In addition to this august body, the organization is sponsored by Redflex Traffic Systems, ACS Transportation Solutions, and Peek Traffic Corporation, all red light camera system vendors. ‘Nuff said.

www.photoenforced.com
PhotoEnforced.com is a growing database of 2200+ red light camera and speed camera locations and fines. It also has links to useful sites for beating traffic tickets, etc.
